Lactose and evolution

Over at scienceblogs.com there are several notes about lactose intolerance and the mutations for tolerating milk past infancy. This is evidence for the theory of evolution. Evolution can be seen and shown in human history. Some supporters of Intelligent Design or other forms of creationism suggest that this is only micro evolution - change within a species and not proof of macro evolution - change to a different species. But this is a false dichotomy. Evolution explains the changes and while greater or lesser changes are noted they are no different in how they occur. Someone who actually works in evolution could explain it better than I can. My limitations are of someone who found that science was not the field they could work in - it wasn't me - but who at one time worked on double majoring in biology and chemistry with a view to becoming a geneticist. It always surprises me that some people accept things like DNA testing while resisting the idea of evolution. Without the ideas of what to look for in evolutionary theory we would not have come up with ideas such as DNA testing. You can't get to one without the other.

There remain many questions and problems in evolutionary theory. But that's not a problem with evolutionary theory. The theory will never be factual as what it does explain how the facts fit together. As new facts are discovered, as new permutations of evolutionary theory suggest tests then evolutionary theory will continue to change to fit the facts.
